The Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race (GNCTR) stands as the longest running national engineering competition in Canada. Since its inception in 1974, co-hosted by the University of Calgary and the University of Alberta in Red Deer, GNCTR has been a testament to Canadian youth engineering excellence and innovation. Each year since, GNCTR travels to a new city, typically alternating between Eastern and Western Canada.
GNCTR brings together nearly 500 engineering students from various disciplines and almost 20 institutions across Canada and the USA. These students are challenged to design and build a toboggan with a concrete running surface, weighing no more than 350 lbs, and capable of safely carrying five students. With past toboggans reaching speeds of up to 80 km/h, stringent safety standards are paramount. Each toboggan must feature fully functional steering and braking systems.

The MUN Concrete Toboggan Team is a multidisciplinary student team that designs, builds, and competes in the Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race (GNCTR), Canada’s longest-running student engineering competition. Our team applies engineering principles across design, manufacturing, testing, and project management to deliver a competitive and innovative toboggan each year.
Open to students from all disciplines, the team offers hands-on experience, technical development, and collaborative problem-solving in a real-world engineering environment.
